A delicious nutritious smoothie loaded with protein and healthy fats!
This snickerdoodle smoothie is inspired by one our friend loves to get at a juice bar here in Orlando, Florida called Skyebird. Unfortunately, that place is now closed, but that doesn't mean we still can't enjoy a delicious smoothie! Our take on the snickerdoodle has some adjustments from the one this juice bar served, but it doesn't make it any less delicious.
What is Maca?
Maca is a root vegetable native to the Andes of Peru. It has been used primarily by the indigenous people of the Andes, particularly the Inca civilization, for thousands of years.
Maca root offers several health benefits, including boosting energy and stamina, supporting hormonal balance, enhancing libido, improving mood and reducing stress, providing essential vitamins and minerals, promoting cognitive function, and potentially benefiting bone health. It's an amazing addition to a plant-based lifestyle- though of course, you can always make the smoothie without it and still enjoy all that snickerdoodle goodness!
Why you'll love this recipe
- Cookie vibes with healthy ingredients: This drink has all the cozy, vanilla cinnamon-y flavor of a snickerdoodle, but with nourishing, whole-food ingredients.
- Easy and energizing: Maca root can help boost energy and improve focus throughout the day. Plus, the whole recipe can be made in little to no time!
- Adaptable for everyone: Dairy-free, gluten-free, and naturally sweetened!
Ingredients
- banana: frozen is best. It gives the smoothie its creamy cold texture.
- plant milk: we enjoy using soy milk. It's high in protein and fortified with calcium and B vitamins.
- almond butter: gives this recipe its warm nutty flavor.
- ground flax seed: make sure it's flax seed in its powder form.
- maple syrup: adds a touch of sweetness
- maca powder: derived from the maca root in the Andes and filled with health benefits.
- cinnamon: a main ingredients to the snickerdoodle, and works so nicely with the other ingredients.
- protein powder: we like to use plain pea protein.
- vanilla extract: If you have a vanilla flavored protein powder, no need to add vanilla extract.
A few tips and swaps
- New to maca? Maca has a unique earthy flavor. If this is your first time consuming maca it could be best to start with small amounts and consult a healthcare provider if you have any health conditions or concerns.
- No maple syrup, no problem: Feel free to sweeten with agave, dates, or a sweetener of your choice!
- Not into protein smoothies: Feel free not to add protein powder if you just want a lighter smoothie, or if you just want a little tasty treat without it being so filling. You'll still enjoy the snickerdoodle goodness.
