Cuban Mamey Shake Made Vegan

A unique tropical fruit that has a smooth, custard-like texture and a sweet, creamy taste with hints of almond and vanilla.

You will love this unique shake. Its sweet and refreshing taste is a favorite of ours, and many Cubans and non-Cubans. Growing up in Miami you get to enjoy a lot of different tropical fruits, in fact there are chains of restaurants that specialize in preparing shakes made from these fruits. They are all a variation of "El palacio de los jugos" or the juice palace, and they all offer different batidos or shakes for you to enjoy, along with food by the pound. Out of all the options they offer, our go to choices are usually mamey or trigo (wheat). Mamey can go by different names based off who you talk to but they will all agree that it is delicious and creamy.

What is Mamey

Mamey is a tropical fruit with a deep rich reddish orange color. Commonly grown in the Caribbean and south Florida, it is very unique, with a distinctive sweet taste and a creamy texture similar to sweet potato or pumpkin pie filling. It blends very well into smoothies, resulting in a colorful, refreshing, and delicious beverage perfect for a hot day.

Where to Buy Mamey

If you can find a ripe mamey then you should definitely make it with this. However, if you are like us and don't have easy access to the actual fruit, you can buy the frozen fruit pulp at a store. Depending on where you are, you might have it in your typical grocery store, otherwise you might need to look for a more "specialty" store. Most Hispanic food grocery stores should have it as a frozen pulp.

How to make Mamey shake

This recipe is really quick to make and takes 2 very simple ingredients. You need:

  • Mamey (the ripe fruit or the frozen fruit pulp)
  • Non-dairy milk (we like soy milk)
  • Pea Protein optional. We like to sometimes make a more filling shake. Feel free to add your favorite protein powder. Keep in mind it will thicken the shake more, so you might need to add more liquid.

That's it, you really don't need more for it to taste good. If it isn't sweet enough, then you can add more pulp, if you are out of pulp then add a little sugar. Some recipes call for adding condensed milk, alternative sweeteners, evaporated milk, they aren't necessary in our opinion. It is common to add a lot of sugar when you order it at a Cuban cafeteria but trust us and give it a taste before you sweeten it any further.
