Stop throwing your banana peels away! This smokey, salty, slightly sweet marinade gives the peels their delicious flavors, and it's pretty simple to make too!
Yes, you can safely consume banana peel and it's actually quite tasty! This recipe works best with very ripe bananas, so now every time we make banana bread we save the peels to make a mock bacon! It's easy, fairly quick, and tasty!
"Bacon" Marinade Ingredients
- Soy Sauce
- Maple Syrup
- Smoked Paprika
- Garlic Powder
How to Make Banana Peel "Bacon"
To get started, wash your bananas before peeling them. Once peeled, use a spoon to scrape the insides and cut any wide peels to be thinner. Make a quick marinade using soy sauce, maple syrup, paprika and garlic powder. It's literally that easy. Let them sit in the marinade for at least 10 mins, then just fry them up in a pan with some oil. We have yet to try them baked in the oven, or even air fried!-- but when we do, we will definitely update this post.
Note: As you fry up your strips of banana peel, add some of the extra marinade to the pan to give them more flavor.
What Does Banana Peel "Bacon" Taste Like?
Crunchy, salty, sweet, with a little banana after taste that's honestly not a bad thing. The marinade does a great job at balancing a salty umami flavor that compliments the slight sweetness of the peels. For what it is, it's surprisingly tasty.
